Our vision is to help disadvantaged and underprivileged children, individuals and families achieve and maintain a stable, self-sufficient living situation through our charitable communities worldwide.

The Family Coalition of Potter’s Gate Charities creates a cohesive, empowered community of healthy, educated, and economically self-sufficient people working to improve their own lives and the lives of their families and neighbors.

As a multi-service neighborhood center, the Family Coalition also leverages and coordinates resources from numerous community partners. Because of this, we can offer programs to improve:
  • Immigrant family relationships
  • Health and wellness
  • Adult education
  • Job readiness
  • Financial literacy

The Family Coalition of Potter’s Gate Charities — although headquartered in New Jersey — serves families worldwide.

The challenges we face

Most of the families and single-parent families in our communities live in poverty, and gang activity is widespread. The Family Coalition aims to remove the barriers to self-sufficiency facing so many of the people it serves, mostly immigrants.

These families regularly face poor job prospects. This is because they have insufficient English skills and little education. They're also not familiar with systems and laws in the United States. They lack transportation. And health care. They may also suffer from mental health and substance abuse issues, family conflict, and separation.

The Coalition works to remove economic barriers to success. We do this through:

  • English as a Second Language (ESL) classes
  • Adult basic education
  • Computer skills classes which also increase participants’ likelihood of employability
  • Financial literacy classes

Through financial literacy, participants learn about the American banking system and open bank accounts. They also gain access to matched savings programs.

The Family Coalition also works to remove personal and relationship barriers by providing:

  • Basic needs assistance
  • Mental health and substance abuse services
  • Health services and education
  • Marriage preparation and relationship education
  • After-school youth mentoring
  • Interventions for families experiencing domestic violence, child abuse or neglect

We recognize that families of all kinds do better as an integral part of a supportive community. This is particularly true of immigrant families. People who are new to the country tend to be very isolated. From their neighbors as well as their family back home.

The Family Coalition is well-known for its skills in combating the isolation of newly-arrived families.

Building bridges

We’re also known for our ability to build bridges between families and mainstream community institutions. The coalitions’ many community partnerships strengthen families by helping them connect directly with services and resources. We also help by building a community of support in the United States.

Potter’s Gate Charities’ cultural sensitivity makes it a safe, home-like haven where each person’s strengths are recognized. Where entire families can work towards self-sufficiency, health, and well-being.

How we support impoverished women

Although the situation is dire, we offer some incredible local programs supporting women and their families.

  • Emergency and transitional shelters for homeless women and their children provide much more than a roof over a family’s head. These shelters strive to improve families’ economic self-sufficiency by providing case management, tutoring, parenting classes, life skills and job training.
  • Permanent housing facilities for homeless and chronically homeless women. This provides varying amounts of financial support for women with multiple economic barriers. Therefore, more women can acquire the income required to maintain their own housing.
  • Maternity homes offer comprehensive services for women living independently after the birth of a child. These services include education and parenting classes as well as preparedness training.
  • Pregnancy counseling programs help expectant mothers resolve any immediate physical, environmental, and emotional needs and challenges. These programs also support women and teens in difficult situations, guiding them to make decisions that are right for them.
